Ingolstadt Power Plant

Welcome to the Ingolstadt power plant, the only power plant in Bavaria that uses oil as a fuel!

Our power plant, approximately 6 kilometers away from Ingolstadt, was built back in the sixties by what was then Bayernwerk. The reason for this choice of location was the proximity of the existing refinery centre and the concentration of consumers in the Ingolstadt region. Since the early sixties, the plant has been producing electricity on the 61 hectare plant premises solely using heavy fuel oil provided by neighboring refineries in Ingolstadt and Vohburg.
This fuel possesses particularly good heating properties and therefore generates relatively small quantities of carbon dioxide.

The Ingolstadt power plant primarily supplies medium and peak load power. Since both the 150 megawatt blocks 1 and 2 were shut down in 1994, electricity is these days generated in the two 420 megawatt blocks 3 and 4.
Together with the Irsching power plant, the Ingolstadt site forms a power plant group managed by the same plant management. A total of 140 employees are working on site 24/7 to guarantee a safe supply of electricity all year round.
